Laak

2020 viola

laak.png

Laak is a work for solo viola incorporating “half-harmonics” — a technique that involves pushing the string down with slight pressure, allowing both the fundamental pitch and the high harmonic to speak simultaneously (or quickly enough that they sound simultaneous).

Laak was written primarily in the neighbourhood of the same name in The Hague, where I was living at the time. It remains unperformed.

The score is available for purchase at the Canadian Music Centre. Please do send me a message via my contact form if you’re interested in premiering it.
